Oh Canada: Fun Facts and Paintings

Canada’s 150th birthday is July 1, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate alongside our neighbors to the North. You may not realize this, but we host thousands of events in Canada every year, from Montreal to Edmonton, Toronto to Halifax, and everywhere in between.

To further appreciate how amazing (and wonderfully odd) this country really is, let’s take a moment to dive into some facts that you may not have known.

Fun facts about Canada

  1. It’s the second largest country in the world (next to Russia).
  2. Kraft Dinner is one of the top selling grocery items: Canadians consume 55% more than Americans.
  3. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving in October.
  4. The dollar coin is called the “Loonie” and the two dollar coin is called the “Toonie.” When Toonies first came out in 1996, some were faulty and you could pop the middle out of them.
  5. The nation’s official phone number is 1-800-O-Canada.
  6. Saskatchewans call their hooded sweatshirts “bunnyhugs.”
  7. Vancouver Island has an annual international bathtub race.
  8. Canadians love Santa Claus. He’s been given an official Canadian passport, and you can write to him using the postal code H0H 0H0. Mrs. Claus answers every letter.
  9. Lacrosse (and not hockey) is the country’s official sport.
  10. It has the longest coastline of any country in the world.
  11. Their official cocktail is The Caesar.
