Special Note: Kaytie’s thousands of reviews averaging 4.7/5 from over ten years of hosting classes have been lost due to a technical glitch. If you enjoyed her expertise, gentleness and good humor please leave a great review to help new customers know her better at a glance. As a local small business the small things make a big difference.
About the event: At this 21+ event, food and drinks are not included.
Let’s break free from every day stressors and get lost in a painting surrounded by our wonderful community. Kaytie, the artist, guides the class with a mix of gentleness, humor, clear instruction and mindfulness. Along the way, she will encourage you to go rogue, get lost in the moment, and share joy with our fellow painters. She offers tips and tricks for learning to paint but also values focusing on growth and playfulness, and letting go of perfection, in order to support an enjoyable experience.
We provide all the supplies including 12x16 canvases and relatively new brushes to create our own versions of the painting step by step. Kaytie does her best to teach the painting in 2 hours or less but will follow the pacing of the majority of painters to increase enjoyment and relaxation. Let’s get creative!
THE FORUM IS A 21 & OVER ESTABLISHMENT with Happy Hour all day Sundays "Always surround yourself with people you can learn from." - Leopold Schmidt, Founder of the Olympus Hotel The Tacoma Forum has moved into the Olympus Hotel, which was founded by Olympia Brewing Company owner, Leopold Schmidt in 1909. The original back bar, which was built in France by Franciscan Monks, remains the shining star of The Forum. Rumor has it that Leopold himself, who was always proud of the once "grandest hotel in Tacoma," continues to watch over the patrons of our establishment. Our philosophy at The Forum is to surround ourselves with the best staff, support our local liquor companies and serve the finest food while creating a meeting place that everyone can enjoy...even Leopold!

I began teaching Paint Nite events in 2016 as a PLU Art grad and have instructed hundreds of art classes since then. This experience helped me improve as a teacher and an artist. I am excited to be back and look forward to using art to connect once more with this awesome community. Outside of teaching art, I am a mom of 2 girls, and I substitute teach in schools. I love spending time with my family, playing games and being out in nature either rollerskating, kayaking or just breathing it in.
Questions about what to expect, what’s included, and how it all works.
Yes. Red Forest Black Umbrella is designed to be achievable at any experience level. More satisfying than it looks difficult — Kaytie breaks every step down clearly. Most of our guests have never picked up a brush before, and they leave with something they're genuinely proud of. Worth knowing: Paint Nite events happen at real bars and restaurants, not studios — it's a night out that happens to involve painting.
A painting class teaches you technique. Paint Nite gives you a finished painting and a good night. Kaytie is a real local artist — not a teacher running a curriculum — and this event happens at The Forum, a real local spot, not a studio. Paint Nite invented this format in 2012 and has sold more than 10 million tickets. The trade-off is honest: lighting varies, it can get loud, and the person at the next easel is a stranger. That's the point. It's more of a night out than a class.
Yes — Red Forest Black Umbrella is a Paint Nite favourite for girls nights in Tacoma. Everyone paints their own canvas, so there's always something to laugh about at the end. If you're planning a bachelorette party or a larger group, private events of 10+ get reserved seating and a custom experience.
Kaytie is a real local artist based in Tacoma — not a franchise employee or a corporate hire. 6 out of 14 guests who've painted with Kaytie say the instruction was amazing. . said: 'What a fun event. My sister and I took our mom for her birthday and she just loved it! Will definitely go again!! Katie Smith was so helpful and really took time to explain the techniques!'
The Forum is a local venue in Tacoma — a real local spot, not a dedicated painting studio. Paint Nite events happen at places like this by design — venues with character, regulars, and a bar. It can get lively. That's what makes it a night out rather than a class. 36% of guests who've attended events at The Forum rated the atmosphere highly.
Yes — we have 8 upcoming events in Tacoma this month. You can view them here.
Red Forest Black Umbrella is a fall painting — rich autumn colors that capture the season beautifully.
Yaymaker is Paint Nite. We brought both brands together under the Paint Nite name — same artists, same events, same format we invented in 2012. More than 10 million tickets have been sold across both brands combined. If you used to attend Yaymaker events in Tacoma, you're in the right place. Welcome back.
Your ticket to Red Forest Black Umbrella includes the canvas, all the paint you'll need, the use of brushes and an apron during the event, and step-by-step instruction from Kaytie. Drinks and food are ordered separately from The Forum — you pay the venue directly for anything you eat or drink.
The Forum's doors open at 11:00 AM, the event starts at 5:30 PM. We suggest showing up by 5:00 PM to give yourself time to pick your seats, get a drink and maybe a bite before Kaytie starts the painting.
You can reschedule your ticket to any other Paint Nite event up to 24 hours before this one starts. After that, tickets are locked — no refunds or changes. If Paint Nite cancels this event for any reason, you'll receive a full automatic refund.
