Mexicali Rosa’s is unlike any other “Mexican” concept out there today. Often copied, but never duplicated, we truly provide authentic “California Style Mexican Food” in our restaurants. Our food originates from the northern border of Mexico and the southern border of California, hence the reference to the authentic product that we cook. The result from blending both cultures creates a taste profile unique only to Mexicali Rosa’s. This cooking style incorporates the simple earthly ingredients of Northern Mexico with the subtle blending of spices and flavors of Californian Cuisine. Mexicali Rosa’s also provides our guests with the atmosphere of being South of the Border by using authentic products and décor to duplicate the feeling and experience of being down South. Our music further enhances the guest experience with the exciting sounds of salsa and mariachi rhythms. The guest experience at Mexicali Rosa’s is completed by the levels of quality food and service that we provide. All of these ingredients combined are our recipe for success. In an industry where the average life span of a restaurant is only seven years, we are proud to be one of the leaders with a history dating back to 1979. Mexicali Rosa’s history and culture are legendary in the city and province in which the concept was born, Ottawa, Ontario. The first store opened in Ottawa in 1979. The concept grew rapidly since its inception, and continues to be a steady growth over the last 30 years has ensured Mexicali Rosa’s place in the industry as the largest full service Mexican restaurant chain in Canada.

I am a passionate writer and painter who currently resides in Ottawa. Leaving any troubles behind, come and join for a couple of hours to relax, have fun, and bring back the creative side of you. There is no right or wrong, just happy accidents and some fun tools to help you along. With inspiration from the painting you selected, splash some colors you love on the canvas and enjoy the pleasure of creating something new, your very own masterpiece.
Questions about what to expect, what’s included, and how it all works.
Yes. Red Poppies is designed to be achievable at any experience level. More satisfying than it looks difficult — Timea breaks every step down clearly. Most of our guests have never picked up a brush before, and they leave with something they're genuinely proud of. Worth knowing: Paint Nite events happen at real bars and restaurants, not studios — it's a night out that happens to involve painting.
A painting class teaches you technique. Paint Nite gives you a finished painting and a good night. Timea is a real local artist — not a teacher running a curriculum — and this event happens at Mexicali Rosa's (Dow's Lake), a real local spot, not a studio. Paint Nite invented this format in 2012 and has sold more than 10 million tickets. The trade-off is honest: lighting varies, it can get loud, and the person at the next easel is a stranger. That's the point. It's more of a night out than a class.
Yes — Red Poppies is a Paint Nite favourite for girls nights in Ottawa. Everyone paints their own canvas, so there's always something to laugh about at the end. If you're planning a bachelorette party or a larger group, private events of 10+ get reserved seating and a custom experience.
Timea is a real local artist based in Ottawa — not a franchise employee or a corporate hire. In Ottawa, 62 out of 85 Paint Nite guests rated their instructor as amazing. Stephanie-Claude B. said: 'My daughter and I had a wonderful time - the artist was great and the painting was so much fun to make!'
Mexicali Rosa's (Dow's Lake) is a local venue in Ottawa — a real local spot, not a dedicated painting studio. Paint Nite events happen at places like this by design — venues with character, regulars, and a bar. It can get lively. That's what makes it a night out rather than a class.
Yes — we have 196 upcoming events in Ottawa this month. You can view them here.
Red Poppies is a summer painting — bright, warm tones that match the season perfectly.
Yaymaker is Paint Nite. We brought both brands together under the Paint Nite name — same artists, same events, same format we invented in 2012. More than 10 million tickets have been sold across both brands combined. If you used to attend Yaymaker events in Ottawa, you're in the right place. Welcome back.
Your ticket to Red Poppies includes the canvas, all the paint you'll need, the use of brushes and an apron during the event, and step-by-step instruction from Timea. Drinks and food are ordered separately from Mexicali Rosa's (Dow's Lake) — you pay the venue directly for anything you eat or drink.
Mexicali Rosa's (Dow's Lake)'s event starts at 7:00 PM. We suggest showing up by 6:30 PM to give yourself time to pick your seats, get a drink and maybe a bite before Timea starts the painting.
You can reschedule your ticket to any other Paint Nite event up to 24 hours before this one starts. After that, tickets are locked — no refunds or changes. If Paint Nite cancels this event for any reason, you'll receive a full automatic refund.
This event has reached our minimum attendance threshold and is guaranteed to run. If we ever have to cancel a guaranteed event, every ticket holder receives a full automatic refund plus a free ticket to a future Paint Nite — no questions asked. The only exception is weather or force majeure, where full refunds are issued but free tickets are not.
